One of the things that should not be missed on a visit to Florence is a good glass of wine produced in the surrounding hills.
Wine has always been popular in Florence, even in ancient times. But there were different ways to consume it.
If today we taste it in some place combined with some appetizers or food and wine specialties, in the past the way in which tasting took place was very different.
At a certain point, starting from the sixteenth century, small openings in the shape of a small door began to appear in the walls of the buildings, often equipped with doors and knockers to knock.
In fact, wine became in that era a real commercial battle between the landed families who began to produce it and, inside their buildings in the city, began to create a room on the ground floor to house barrels and demijohns so as to be able to sell their product to thirsty customers.
They did it through these little doors, each family ensuring to sell the best wine in the city.
Each wine hole has its own shape and characteristics and in the city there are many of them left.
Some have been closed over time, others are in poor condition of conservation, others have been reopened and even brought back to their ancient use.
One in particular has come back to life thanks to the artist Clet who in his studio in the city has a small wine hole that has become a showcase.
An association has been born that deals with the history of these little windows, records them and tells their story.
This is their website https://buchettedelvino.org/home-1/home.html.
Enjoy your glass of wine everyone!!
